My mother was a lady rider.  She and my father would ride the many small Texas roads with me, so the passion to ride is in my blood. However, I didn’t ride my own motorcycle until 2004 when my husband purchased me a wedding gift – ‘14 HD 1200 Custom Sportster.   In 2008, I became a MSF instructor, and have enjoyed teaching with several schools in Phoenix. My husband and I both enjoy practicing our motorcycles so much so, that we have created several field practice days within the city, and with organizations where we were Safety Officers. I am currently Safety Officer for Harley Davidson of Scottsdale HOG #3160. I became a performing member with the HDoS Motorcycle Drill Team in 2016 and I love it! I’m currently a Police Assistant for Phoenix PD . I also coach and encourage women motorcyclists in Empowering Women Riders, and that will be going online in the near future.

I strongly believe in what AMSAF is doing, and I am so excited to be on board!

Merlo Pile

Board Member

Merlo recently moved in Arizona in late summer 2015 from San Jose, California. He was 16 yrs old when he first experienced riding on a 2-wheeled motorized vehicle – his grandfather’s scooter. But that riding thrill only lasted a week when he visited his grandparents in the Philippines in 1979. Shortly thereafter followed college, Air Force, wife, kids, more college, divorce, civilian life, new wife, law school, one more kid, and then finally at 44 yrs old -- the Harley! As a “late bloomer” to riding motorcycles, Merlo has been focused on improving his riding proficiency in the parking lots. And he continues his focus on his riding skills because he actually enjoys it! Being a Road Captain with the San Jose HOGs, it opened an opportunity for him to share this passion of shooting through the orange cones with his monthly skills practices for six years before he left. These monthly practices also went beyond the parking lot to the local streets and freeways.

Not loud pipes, not shiny chrome, not flashing lights, nor fancy paint, Merlo is a firm believer that the safest things you can add to your motorcycle are your riding skills. And an integral part of safe riding includes the awareness of the risks and consequences to the other parts of riding such as riding gear, mental frame of mind, and physical limitations.

As an AMSAF Board Member, Merlo is excited to widen his advocacy for motorcycle safety at the state level.

Like many others, my experience with motorcycles began with riding dirt bikes as a young boy. Although I have enjoyed dirt bikes, the majority of my 42 years of riding has been on street bikes. Over my life, I have been fortunate to own and ride a wide-variety of makes, models, and styles of motorcycles. As I have gained experience and had the opportunity to participate in rider training, my enjoyment level has increased. Improving my physical and mental motorcycle riding skills has enabled me to safely use a motorcycle as my primary mode of transportation and participate in the motorcycle riding life style. I encourage others to improve their skills and assist with training classes and practice sessions on a regular basis. Becoming involved with the team from AMSAF has allowed me to partner with others who share the desire to improve the safety of our fellow riders, increase awareness of motorcyclists, and provide opportunities for training.

I have been a master level social worker for the past 22 years. I am a mom to an amazing, gifted daughter. I like playing pool and continuing my education with classes I find interesting.

Two years ago I crossed off an item on my bucket list: learn how to ride a motorcycle! I took a MSF class and decided to purchase a small 250cc. It only took four months for me to move up to a Harley Sportster. I have continued my motorcycle education with classes, private instruction and practice. I believe strongly in AMSAF’s mission and am happy to contribute in any way I can.
