Industry leader AMSAF expands scope, shares Arizona crash and fatality statistics

AMSAF, one of Arizona’s key voices with regard to driver, rider and overall vehicular safety, continues to expand its reach and scope to bring more businesses into the safety fold, and to share the statistics that drive that need.

“AMSAF continues to meet the safety awareness concerns of donors and sponsors as we spread our wings to focus even more on all types of traffic, motorcycle, driver, bicyclists and pedestrians, among others,” says AMSAF’s executive director Mick Degn.

Distracted driving, crashes and fatalities continue to be a critical issue in the State of Arizona. “AMSAF has been growing and expanding its look, and its reach, to work closer with myriad businesses, the public and organizations of all kinds,” adds Degn. “Along with some very bad driving habits, thousands of people are moving to our state every month, which is making our roadways extremely busy, crowded and dangerous. We must work together, pay attention to our surroundings and make sure we are following the rules of the road at all times.”

Some of the reasons why AMSAF continues to grow its services:

  • nearly one-third of multiple vehicle crashes with motorcycles are read-end collisions
  • there were 121,345 crashes in Arizona; 1,063 were fatal
  • almost 60% of motorcycle crashes are the fault of another vehicle
  • there were 1,159 bicycle crashes with some 1,128 people injured
  • the largest number of people killed and injured in crashes were males between the ages of 25-44
  • most motorcycle crashes occur during daylight hours
  • 119,991 crashes were the result of road rage
  • 1,888 pedestrian crashes took place with 302 individuals killed
  • most crashes and fatalities occurred during daylight hours

Degn says the key to getting people involved in safety is awareness and education. All businesses in Arizona are encouraged to become part of making safety number one for their employees, customers and the motoring public.

AMSAF is the first and only program of its kind in the United States. The non-profit organization has helped 1,700 motorcyclists purchase DOT-approved full face or modular helmets; provided 5,100 scholarships to Arizona riders; distributed $2,000,000 in grants for motorcycle safety; embraces Share the Road, which is centered on reducing distracted driving and riding in all forms in Arizona; and trained more than 150 individuals through its new Accident Scene Management program. Its mission is to promote safety and awareness and reduce crashes and fatalities.
